Privacy statement

The websites, www.steenbergs.co.uk and www.steenbergsorganic.net, are owned and operated by Steenbergs Limited ("Steenbergs").

At Steenbergs, we are very aware that most consumers are concerned about their personal privacy. Steenbergs strongly believes in protecting the confidentiality and security of information we collect about individuals. This Privacy Statement is provided to explain to you what personal information may be collected at our sites and how we may use it. These practices may be updated and modified from time to time, so we would encourage you to check this Statement regularly.  How Steenbergs manages and protects customer's personal data under the Data Protection Act 1998 and the Privacy and Electronic Communications (EC Directive) Regulations 2003.  For more information on data protection and protecting your personal data, please visit the Information Commissioner's Office.   Our guiding principles are that, in accordance with the Data Protection Act 1998, any information you give to us will be held securely and in accordance with the rules on data protection either directly by Steenbergs or by Engage Interactive Limited, which is the registered data controller for personal data collected online through Steenbergs' websites.

Steenbergs collects personally identifiable information about individuals during the account registration process, but provides individuals that have given such information with a "soft opt-in" to consent to receiving electronic marketing in the future from Steenbergs while registering.  In addition, such personally identifiable information may be gathered from the enquiry section, newsletter subscription or emails sent via the websites.  At the registration and order completion stages, Steenbergs provides further explanation about how it uses customer information and the ways that customers and subscribers can be excluded from future direct marketing by Steenbergs and/or its charity partner - see Data Protection.  Save for the relationship with our charity partner, currently WaterAid, personally identifiable information on individual users will never be sold or otherwise transferred to unaffiliated third parties and is only for the use of Steenbergs.

We will not share personally identifiable information other than in relation to Steenbergs' current contractual relationship with WaterAid.  There are a number of exceptions to this, which are (i) to help us process questions you may have about a purchase and its delivery or other enquiry you may have; (ii) to confirm, correct or verify what we know about you; (iii) to help us or law enforcement agencies to prevent fraud, money laundering, terrorism and other crimes; (iv) financial accounting purposes; (v) to enable Steenbergs to partner with its chosen charity partner.

Users should be aware that Steenbergs has links to third parties that offer subscription and/or registration-based services and through its commitment to donate 20p per order to WaterAid, its charity partner.  For example, our online payments are processed by WorldPay, which processes your card details. Steenbergs is not responsible for any actions or policies of such third parties and users should check the applicable privacy policy of such party when providing personally identifiable information to them.

Users should be aware that non-personal information and data may be automatically collected through the standard operation of Steenbergs' Internet servers or through the use of "cookies". Like many companies, Steenbergs may use "cookies" technology to enhance your experience. "Cookies" are small text files which a website can use to recognise repeat users, facilitate the user's ongoing access to and use of the site, track usage, follow site behaviour and compile aggregate data that will allow website improvements. Cookies are not programs that come onto an user's system and damage files. Generally, cookies work by assigning a unique number to the user that has no meaning outside the assigning site. Users should be aware that Steenbergs cannot control the use of cookies or the resulting information by advertisers or third parties hosting data for Steenbergs. If a user does not want information collected through the use of cookies, there is a simple procedure in most browsers that allows the user to deny or accept the cookie feature; however, users should note that cookies are necessary to provide the user with certain features (e.g. the shopping cart functionality and customised delivery of information) available on the Steenbergs websites.  For more information on cookies, please refer to "Cookie Policy" on Steenbergs website or refer to Allaboutcookies.

Upon request, Steenbergs allows any user to "opt out" of further promotional contacts at any time from Steenbergs either by emailing to unsubscribe@steenbergs.co.uk or contacting us by other means. Additionally upon request, Steenbergs will use reasonable efforts to allow users to update/correct personal information previously submitted which the user states is erroneous to the extent such activities will not compromise privacy or security interests. Also, upon a user's request, Steenbergs will use commercially reasonable efforts functionally to delete the user and his or her personal information from its database; however, it may be impossible to delete a user's entry without some residual information because of backups and records of deletions.  For data protection purposes, customers' personal data collected through the websites is controlled by an external agency, Engage Interactive Limited, which is registered as data controller at the Information Commissioner's Office under Z2963649 for the purposes of Steenbergs' customer data.

The foregoing policies were effective and originally posted on 5 April 2005 and have since been updated on 10 October 2011, 8 May 2012 and 19 June 2012. Steenbergs reserves the right to change this policy at any time by notifying users of the existence of a new privacy statement. This statement and the policies outlined herein are not intended to and do not create any contractual or other legal rights in or on behalf of any party.
