Plain Boiled Rice

Measure ½ cup of rice per person, then wash the rice until rinsing water is clear. Then add 2 cups of water for each cup of rice to be cooked. Bring to the boil, drop in ½ teaspoon of butter and turn heat very low. Cover pot with lid and allow to cook slowly and undisturbed until done. Never, never stir the rice and never look at rice during the first 20 minutes of cooking. If the rice on the top is flaky and cooked through and if natural steam holes are formed in the dull dry surface of the snow-white mound of individual grains of rice, then the rice is ready.

Brown rice needs a little longer but we also suggest
