Steenbergs Facing Heaven Chillis come from the Sichuan Region of China and are sometimes called zhǐ tiān jiāo chilli.  Facing heaven chillis get their name as they literally turn up on the plant and grow up towards the heavens.  Steenbergs facing heaven chillis are about 5cm long (1.5 inches) in the shape of a sharply tapering cone, with a dark red colour and a medium heat.  They are great to add a bit to spice up your Sichuan style Chinese food or use to top pizzas.

Chilli plants vary considerably in size, appearance and heat.  Facing heaven chillis are a strain of Capsicum annuum. They are a medium hot chilli with a deep, blood red pod which is 3 - 6cm long (1 - 2 inches) and has a classic chili conical shape. Facing heaven chillis have a heat that is 7/10 or 15,000-30,000 Scoville heat units.  Their pungent bite comes from the high levels of capsaicin present in the fruit; capsaicin causes the brain to release endorphins and so feelings of wellbeing. To dry these Facing Heaven chillis, the fresh chillies are dried outside on concrete floors. At night they are heaped into piles and covered with tarpaulins to protect them, before being spread out again during the day. It takes roughly three days for the moisture content to be brought down to 10% from 70-80% when fresh.  For some more information on Facing heaven chilli, try Wikipedia.
