Steenbergs Frankincense is one of the classic, mysterious and mythical spices that got us into spices and is probably best known nowadays as being one of the three gifts presented by the wise men in the bible at the birth of Jesus.

Frankincense comes from a scrubby and unpretentious tree, Boswellia sacra.  Trees start producing resin after about 8 years, with tapping carried out 2-3 times a year with the final taps producing the better resin.  Frankincense when fresh is a softish yellow, opaque, tough, solid substance, with the same odour as crude turpentine, but over time it becomes dry and brittle, darker in colour and of a milder odour.  Frankincense has a turpentiney, strong and sweet incense smell that you would expect from an incense, which is used in many churches and other religious ceremonies throughout the world.  Frankincense is used in perfumery and aromatherapy.  I have written a number of blogs on frankincense and myrrh, which provides a lot more gen on frankincense.  Further information on frankincense is available at Wikipedia.

Frankincense forms part of Steenbergs range of specialist spices.  We have a range of specialist products, including myrrh and mastic, as well as other household items like incense sticks.  If you have any suggestions, why not email to enquiries@steenbergs.co.uk or ring us on 01765 640 088.
