Cassia Ground Powder Organic

Steenbergs Organic Cassia Powder is sometimes mistakenly called cinnamon powder or is known by its common name of bakers' cinnamon or false cinnamon, and comes from the Chinese cinnamon plant, Cinnamomum cassia.  Organic cassia is a key spice in Thai and South East Asian cooking.  Organic cassia powder is a reddish-brown in colour and is highly perfumed and has a penetrating sweet and lingering aroma, while its flavour has an agreeable bitterness together with the highly perfumed, exotic higher notes.  It's a matter of personal preference, but I prefer true cinnamon and find organic cassia a little bit blunter and less subtle and characterful than true cinnamon, but as a baking spice it packs a much more powerful flavour kick through your biscuits or cakes.

Looking and tasting very similar to organic cinnamon , Steenbergs organic cassia tends to be better for strong spicier dishes as opposed to the sweetness from cinnamon. At Steenbergs, one of our favourite types of food that we use Steenbergs organic cassia is the wonderful cape Malay food found in South Africa. Steenbergs organic cassia comes from Indonesia and is also available as part of our Thai box.
