Steenbergs Organic Allspice Powder - or organic ground allspice - is mostly used (and is very popular) in cakes and baking, as opposed to its whole counterpart which is normally a savoury spice. Steenbergs organic allspice powder is simply the highly aromatic dried allspice berry ground down to a powder. Allspice is sometimes called Jamaica pepper or pimento - not be confused with pimenta which is pepper in Spanish.
Allspice is the dried and cured, unripe berry from a tropical evergreen tree related to myrtle and native to Cuba, Guatemala, Honduras, Jamaica and parts of Mexico. Steenbergs organic allspice usually comes from Guatemala or Honduras. Allspice's name is because its flavour resembles a combination of pepper, cloves, cinnamon and nutmeg, with the warm clove-like aroma being dominant. It should be slightly oily when rubbed in you fingers, but never dry and dusty.
Allspice is used in many sweet recipes, especially baked items like biscuits and cakes. Allspice is one of the ingredients for Steenbergs Organic Mixed Spice, Organic Lebkuchen Spices and Organic Stollen Spices. Allspice is also great in fruit desserts, such as fruit crumbles. Savoury wise allspice is the sweetness underpinning the warmer spices in a classic Jamaican Jerk Seasoning and is excellent in rice stuffings for chicken, or pates
